Chown Pella Lofts

Almost 100 years ago, Portland Hack and Dray started the Oregon Transfer Company, working from a four story building on the corner of NW 13th and Glisan. Almost a year later three men, Ben Holladay, George Weidler, and William Halsey, added a six-story structure next door. These two buildings operated as one warehouse for many businesses. Coca Cola, Wrigley, Ponds, National Lock, and Cudahy Packing all operated their productions here, which was a very convenient location considering the railroad services from old Spokane, Portland & Seattle provided transportation for freight.

In 1979 Oregon Transfer Co. became too big for the space and Frank and Elenor Chown moved the Chown Company into the space. The windows and Door division maintained this space for 9 years until the industrial area started becoming what it is today. The family name remained even though the building took on a different use as condos.
